KARACHI: The Sindh Irrigation Department has issued a serious warning about an impending water shortage and drought affecting Karachi and other parts of the province.
๐ Water Levels Critically Low
Due to low rainfall during the ongoing Rabi season, water reservoirs have dropped to dangerously low levels:
๐น Tarbela Dam: Only 0.102 MAF (Million Acre Feet)
๐น Mangla Dam: Only 0.226 MAF
Officials warn that both dams could reach dead levels within 4 to 5 days, worsening the water crisis.

If the shortage continues, Sindh could experience a 50% water crisis at the start of the Kharif crop season, severely affecting agriculture, drinking water supply, and daily life.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported a 52% decrease in rainfall in Sindh. The ongoing dry spell is expected to last until February and March 2025, further worsening the drought.

Authorities have urged local governments to ensure fair water distribution and take emergency measures to mitigate the crisis. Deputy commissioners in Karachi, Khairpur, and Tharparkar have been directed to prepare alternative water supply plans.
